Class topics include:

  • Parenting styles and positive discipline
  • Stress and anger management
  • Effective communication
  • Child development
  • Recognizing and preventing child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence
  • Building self-esteem, family values, and family fun

Parent Aide Program

The Parent Aide Support Program pairs parents under stress, or whose children may be at risk of abuse or neglect, with trained professionals or volunteers who support them in reaching their goals. Parent Aides build trusting, supportive relationships with parents while modeling positive parenting skills and offering encouragement every step of the way.

The program is:

  • Parent-focused and one-on-one
  • In-home and convenient
  • Non-judgmental and caring
  • Consistent, nurturing, and supportive

Parent Aides meet with families 1–2 hours each week, with the average family staying in the program for about 13 months. The result is safer, more resilient families who feel supported and empowered, not judged.

Adolescent Parenting Program

We provide education and support for teens (ages 19 and under) who are pregnant or parenting for the first time. The program helps young parents with:

  • Family planning
  • Continuing their education
  • Improving maternal and infant health
  • Avoiding abuse and neglect of self or child
  • Building parenting and life management skills
  • Planning for future employment

APP also offers a Teen Peer Group that meets throughout the year for at least 25 hours of instruction and field trips. These sessions provide a safe, supportive space for young parents to connect, share experiences, and learn about parenting and life skills—reminding them that they are not alone.

Available in Alamance County.

Parent Teen Solutions Program

We help families with children ages 8–19 improve their relationships and strengthen functioning at home, in school, and in the community.

The program involves in-home counseling support for families with at-risk teens, offering at least 3 hours of weekly support for up to 9 months.

The program equips families with tools to resolve conflict, improve communication, and build a stronger, healthier home environment.

Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program

This program provides structured support for at-risk youth ages 10–19 who are referred for substance use or abuse.

Over the course of 25 weeks, participants take part in:

  • 15 weeks of weekly group counseling sessions focused on education and peer support
  • 10 additional weeks of counseling, blending family and individual sessions

The program helps youth understand the risks of substance use, build coping skills, strengthen family relationships, and set goals for a healthier future.

Peer Support Services

Peer Support Specialists—trained individuals who have faced their own mental health challenges—work alongside participants to provide mentorship, encouragement, and practical strategies for daily life.

Through one-on-one support, peers help participants:

  • Set and achieve personal goals
  • Build skills for independent living
  • Overcome struggles and challenges
  • Strengthen community connections

This supportive relationship gives individuals an anchor of hope as they navigate recovery and growth.

Respite Services

Respite Services provide parents of children ages 0–17 with the chance to take a much-needed break from the daily stresses of caregiving. These short-term childcare options help reduce stress and strengthen family well-being.

Families receive scholarships to help cover the cost of childcare, whether in daycare centers, with trusted supervision providers, or through other safe, reliable options. Block parties and drop-in events are also provided throughout the year for parents to get a temporary break.

By giving parents the space to rest and recharge, Respite Services help prevent burnout, reduce family stress, and create healthier environments for children to thrive.
